Yuri Levada was a famous Russian scientist. He studied sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live together. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1952. Later, he became a professor. He was the first Russian professor to teach sociology.

Levada used surveys to learn what people thought. Surveys are sets of questions for many people. Sometimes, the government did not like his work. In 1969, they took away his rank as a professor. In 1972, many sociologists lost their jobs. Levada had to find new ways to work. He led a group that was not fully legal. They still met to study science.

In 1988, he helped start a new center. This center was called VCIOM. He was the director of VCIOM for many years. In 2003, there were problems at that center. The government wanted to control the work. All the workers quit their jobs. They started a new group called the Levada Center. This group still studies how people feel about life. They even publish a book every year. It is called "Russian Public Opinion."
