They had many new ideas about life and spirit. One main idea was that people are naturally good. They also believed that nature is good.

These thinkers valued being self-reliant. This means they wanted to be independent. They felt that society could sometimes change a person's pure nature. To stay true, people should trust their own thoughts. They believed individuals could find new truths on their own.

Nature was very special to them. They felt a deep connection to the land. Some even lived in small cabins to be close to it. They believed the natural world helps the soul. They also thought all people are part of one big spirit. This spirit is called the Over-Soul. It connects every person together.
