Transcendentalism was a major movement of ideas in the United States. It began in the late 1820s and 1830s. Most of this thinking happened in the New England region.

This movement was part of literature, politics, and philosophy. It was one of the first big philosophical currents in America. Many people believe that spiritual things are more real than material objects. They felt that thought is more important than ordinary human experience. This way of thinking helped shape early American philosophy.

How did these thinkers see the world? They believed that people and nature are both naturally good. They thought that society and its institutions could corrupt a person's purity. To stay good, people must be self-reliant and independent.

This means trusting your own inner thoughts instead of just following others. They also believed in the "Over-Soul." This is the idea that all people are connected as one being. Every person holds a small piece of this divine spirit within themselves.

This movement grew out of other ideas and groups. It was closely related to Unitarianism in Boston. Many thinkers were also influenced by German and English Romanticism. They studied the ideas of Immanuel Kant and others.

Some followers also looked to Indian religions for inspiration. In 1844, a translation of the Lotus Sutra appeared in their journal. This shows how they gathered many different ideas together. They wanted a more intense spiritual experience than what was common then.

On September 12, 1836, the Transcendental Club was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was a key leader of this group. Other famous members included Margaret Fuller and Henry David Thoreau. They also had members like Elizabeth Peabody and Amos Bronson Alcott. The group published their ideas in a journal called *The Dial*. This journal started in 1840 and helped spread their message. Many members were artists or writers who struggled to make a living.

Nature was a very important part of their lives. They used the natural world to understand the inner workings of life.

Emerson wrote that in the woods, people return to reason and faith. Some even tried living in nature to test these ideas. Charles Stearns Wheeler built a shanty at Flint's Pond in 1836. Thoreau stayed there for six weeks in 1837. This trip inspired him to build his own cabin at Walden later. Their love for nature made them skeptical of fast industrial growth.
