Toy Story is a landmark 1995 American animated adventure comedy film.

It was produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. This film holds a unique place in cinema history as the first entirely computer-animated feature film. It was also the very first feature-length film released by Pixar. Directed by John Lasseter, the film was written by a team including Joss Whedon and Andrew Stanton. The story explores a world where toys are sentient, meaning they have feelings and come to life when humans are not present. This concept allows the film to explore deep themes regarding the relationship between children and their belongings.

The plot centers on the tension between two very different toys. Woody is an old-fashioned pullstring cowboy doll who serves as the leader of the group.

His status changes when Andy, the toys' owner, receives a new toy named Buzz Lightyear. Buzz is a modern space cadet action figure with various electronic features. Unlike the other toys, Buzz initially believes he is an actual Space Ranger rather than a plaything. This misunderstanding leads to an existential crisis for Buzz when he realizes his true nature. Woody develops intense jealousy as Buzz becomes Andy's new favorite. The two must eventually overcome their rivalry to escape a neighbor named Sid and reunite with Andy.

Developing the film required a complex process of storytelling and technical innovation. Early story treatments by Lasseter, Stanton, and Docter were actually rejected by Disney. The studio wanted a tone that was "edgier" than what Pixar intended. Production was halted after several unsuccessful story reels. The team eventually rewrote the script to focus on a specific emotional core. They decided that toys deeply want children to play with them. This central desire drives all the hopes, fears, and actions of the characters. At the time, Pixar was a relatively small studio working under minor financial constraints.

The history of the film is tied to the evolution of computer technology. In 1988, Lasseter produced a short film called Tin Toy, which was told from a toy's perspective.

This short film won an Academy Award and caught the attention of Disney. While Disney usually produced animation in-house, they eventually struck a production deal with Pixar. This allowed Pixar to create movies outside of the traditional Disney studio system. By the early 1990s, computers had finally become powerful and cheap enough to make a feature-length film possible. This technological leap allowed Pixar to move from short commercials to full-length storytelling.

Toy Story was a massive commercial and critical success upon its release. It premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 19, 1995.

It was released in North American theaters on November 22, 1995. The film was the highest-grossing movie during its opening weekend. It eventually grossed over $363 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1995. Critics praised the technical innovation of the animation, the screenplay, and the musical score by Randy Newman. The voice performances by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were also highly acclaimed.

The film's impact is reflected in its many awards and honors. Toy Story received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song for "You've Got a Friend in Me." It was also honored with a non-competitive Special Achievement Academy Award. In 2005, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. This designation is given to films that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. It was one of only nine films chosen during the registry's first year of eligibility. These honors cement its status as one of the most important films in the history of the medium.

Beyond the single film, Toy Story launched a massive multimedia franchise. The success led to four sequels, starting with Toy Story 2 in 1999. It also spawned a spin-off film titled Lightyear in 2022 and numerous short films. The film has undergone several theatrical re-releases, including a 3D version in 2009. A 30th anniversary re-release is also planned for 2025. The film's legacy connects the worlds of computer science and traditional storytelling. It proved that computer-generated imagery could carry deep emotional weight and complex character arcs. This paved the way for the modern era of animation seen in theaters today.
