It was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. The film is a celebrated work that explores deep themes such as responsibility and the "circle of life." This concept describes how all living things are interconnected within an ecosystem. The movie follows the journey of Simba, a young lion prince, as he navigates loss and leadership. It is widely considered one of the greatest animated films ever created.

The plot follows a specific sequence of dramatic events in the Pride Lands. King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi rule from Pride Rock with their son, Simba. Mufasa's brother, Scar, desires the throne and plots to eliminate both the king and the prince. Scar manipulates Simba into exploring a dangerous elephant's graveyard. During a wildebeest stampede, Mufasa dies while saving Simba. Scar convinces Simba that the death was his fault, causing the cub to flee into exile. Simba eventually finds refuge with a meerkat named Timon and a warthog named Pumbaa. They live by the Swahili motto "hakuna matata," which means "no worries." After meeting his childhood friend Nala, Simba realizes he must return to challenge Scar and restore the Pride Lands.

Production of the film involved several distinct creative stages and shifts in vision. Initially, the project was conceived under the title "King of the Jungle." The original director, George Scribner, intended to create a film in a nature documentary style. However, the studio decided to reimagine the project as a musical. This decision led to the hiring of Rob Minkoff as co-director in April 1992. The creative team also worked with songwriters Elton John and Tim Rice to develop the musical numbers. To ensure the setting felt authentic, the production team traveled to Kenya for research and inspiration.

The development history of the script shows many different influences and contributors. The story draws significant inspiration from William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. Early treatments for the film were written by various people, including Thomas Disch, who titled his version "King of the Kalahari." Another early version by Jenny Tripp introduced the name Simba but featured different animal companions. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton drafted early versions of the final script. Later, Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts were hired to revise the work. This collaborative process helped shape the complex narrative seen in the final film.

The film achieved massive commercial and critical significance upon its release on June 24, 1994. It earned an initial worldwide gross of $763 million. This total made it the highest-grossing film of 1994. At the time, it was the second-highest-grossing film of all time, trailing only Jurassic Park. The Lion King held the record for the highest-grossing animated film until 2003, when Finding Nemo surpassed it. It remains the highest-grossing traditionally animated film in history.

Beyond its box office numbers, the film received numerous prestigious honors. It won two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The success of the movie launched a massive multibillion-dollar franchise. This franchise includes a Broadway stage adaptation and two direct-to-video sequels. It also includes two television series and a photorealistic remake released in 2019. The 2019 remake became the highest-grossing animated film at that time.

The cultural impact of The Lion King is recognized by major institutions. In 2016, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. This selection was based on the film being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. The film's ability to connect with audiences through its music and animation has ensured its lasting legacy. It continues to be a primary example of how animation can tackle complex human emotions and social structures.
