Mr. Potato Head is a famous American toy designed for creative play.

It consists of a plastic model of a potato head. Children can attach various plastic parts to this body to create unique characters. Typical accessories include eyes, ears, noses, mouths, and mustaches. You can also add clothing like shoes, pants, and hats. Some sets even include items like glasses or a pipe. This toy allows users to mix and match parts to express their imagination.

The way the toy works has changed significantly over the decades. In the original 1952 version, the kit provided separate plastic parts and pushpins. Players would use these pins to affix the facial features directly into a real potato or other vegetable.

Later, Hasbro began including a plastic potato body in the sets. This change occurred in 1964 due to safety regulations and complaints about rotting vegetables. Today, the parts fit into specific slots on a plastic body. This design prevents the parts from being used as sharp punctures.

There are many different types and versions of these characters. The original Mr. Potato Head was joined by Mrs. Potato Head in 1953. Later, the family expanded to include Brother Spud and Sister Yam. In the 1960s, the Tooty Frooty Friends kit offered over 60 pieces. This allowed children to build characters like Katie the Carrot or Oscar the Orange. Modern versions include themed sets such as Chef, Pirate, or even a Rockstar. There are also specialized "Sports Spuds" that feature professional sports teams.

The history of the toy begins with toymaker George Lerner. Born in Brooklyn, Lerner invented the "Funny Face Man" in 1949. Some say he was inspired by his own children playing with food. Others believe he saw a nephew placing sticks into potatoes in a garden. In 1951, Lerner created a prototype for the product. He initially tried to sell the rights to Post Cereals. Eventually, the Hassenfeld Brothers, which is now known as Hasbro, bought the rights. They began distributing the toy in 1952.

Mr. Potato Head holds a very significant place in marketing history. On April 30, 1952, it became the first toy ever advertised on television. This campaign was also the first to target children directly. This strategy encouraged children to convince their parents to buy the product. This concept is often called the "nag factor." The toy was incredibly successful during its launch. Over one million kits were sold in its very first year. Since its release, sales have exceeded 100 million units.

The characters have also become famous in popular culture. Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head appear as main characters in the Toy Story film franchise. The character of Mr. Potato Head was voiced by the comedian Don Rickles. The toy has even been featured as a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1985, the character even ran for mayor of Boise, Idaho. It received four postal votes in that political campaign. This achievement was verified by Guinness World Records.

Today, the brand connects to many different interests and modern values. Hasbro updated the name to simply "Potato Head" in 2021. They also introduced a sustainable version called Mr. Potato Head Goes Green. This version uses plant-based plastic made from sugarcane. The toy also features many licensed versions from movies. You can find characters like Darth Tater from Star Wars or Tony Starch from Iron Man 2. These connections show how the toy remains a part of many different stories.
