Topsoil is the very top layer of the ground.

It is usually 5 to 10 inches deep. This layer is made of tiny mineral bits and organic matter. Organic matter is stuff like dead plants that adds power to the soil. This layer is very busy with life. It is home to many bacteria and fungi. These tiny things help plants get the food they need. Insects also live here. They help by moving the soil around. Most plant roots live in the topsoil to find nutrients.

Topsoil can be lost through erosion. This happens when wind or rain washes the soil away. We lose topsoil much faster than nature can make it. It can take 500 to 1,000 years to make just one inch. If the soil gets too dry, it can blow away easily. When heavy rain hits farm fields, the soil can wash into rivers. This can hurt the water and the animals living there. We can use cover crops to help keep the soil in place.
