Topsoil is the very top layer of our Earth.

It is a busy place full of life. This layer is usually 5 to 10 inches deep. It is made of tiny mineral bits and organic matter. Organic matter is stuff like dead plants. This matter helps the soil hold water and air. Most plant roots live here to find nutrients.

This layer is often called the A Horizon. It is the layer just above the subsoil. Without this layer, plants would struggle to grow. It is the main resource for all crops.

Many tiny things work together in the topsoil. Bacteria and fungi live in this layer. They break down organic matter into food. This food helps plant roots absorb nutrients. Insects also live here to help the soil. They break down material and move the soil around. This process is called aeration. It keeps the soil healthy and full of air. A healthy topsoil is a rich microbiome. This means it is full of many different living species.

People have studied soil for a long time. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has manuals for soil. They help people understand different soil layers. In the United States, there is no single legal definition for topsoil. Different groups use different rules to check it. For example, the British Standards Institution has guidelines. They check things like pH and nutrient levels. These rules help make sure soil is good for plants. Some people even make artificial topsoil for special uses.

There are many important facts about how soil works. One key part is the carbon to nitrogen ratio. Carbon gives plants energy to grow. Nitrogen helps plants build their tissues. In the UK, a good ratio is less than 20:1. Different plants need different kinds of soil. Blueberries like ericaceous soil. Clover grows well in calcareous soil. The Venus flytrap likes soil with very little nitrogen.

We must choose the right soil for each plant.

We must also protect our topsoil from erosion. Erosion happens when wind or rain washes soil away. This is a big problem for our planet. It can take 500 to 1,000 years to make one inch of soil. We are losing soil much faster than it can grow back. In the United States, we lose almost 3 tons per acre every year. This can cost over $45 billion in losses. When soil washes into rivers, it can cause algae blooms. These blooms can be toxic to animals and people.
