Soil

earth science Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Soil is a busy and vital part of our world. It is much more than just simple dirt. Scientists call the Earth's body of soil the pedosphere. This layer connects with the air, the water, and all living things. Soil is a complex system made of three different states. It has solids like minerals and organic matter. It also has a liquid part called the soil solution. This liquid holds water and dissolved substances. Finally, there is a gas part called the soil atmosphere.

How does soil work to support life? It acts like a giant recycling system for the planet. Soil provides a home for many different living things. A single gram of soil can hold billions of tiny organisms. This includes many species of microbes that are still being explored.

These organisms help turn dead matter into nutrients. Plants use these nutrients to grow big and strong. Soil also acts as a filter to clean water. It can remove impurities and even kill some disease agents.

Soil forms through many different steps over a long time. It starts with parent material, which are the original minerals. These minerals undergo weathering to break them down into smaller pieces. Water plays a huge role in this way it works. Water moves materials up and down through the soil layers. This movement is called leaching. Animals also move things around through a process called bioturbation.

Over time, these steps create distinct layers called horizons. A mature soil often has three main layers named A, B, and C.

People have studied soil for a very long time. A scientist named Vasily Dokuchaev was a famous pioneer. He lived from 1846 to 1903 and is called the father of pedology. Pedology is the study of how soils form and are classified. There is another branch called edaphology. This branch studies how soil affects living things. Most soils on Earth are not very old. They are from the Pleistocene or Cenozoic periods.

You can see how soil relates to the world around you. It helps manage the Earth's carbon cycle by storing carbon. This is very important as the planet warms. Soil also helps regulate the atmosphere. Without it, plants would not have the support they need. Plants need the air in the soil pores to breathe. They also need the water held in the soil to survive.
