A toddler is a young child between the ages of one and three years. The name comes from the word "toddle," which means to walk in an unsteady way.

This stage is a time of huge growth for the mind and body. Toddlers work hard to learn how to move, talk, and play with others. They are also learning how to be their own person. Every child grows at their own pace, which is called a continuum. This means there is a very wide range of what is considered normal.

Learning to move happens in a few different ways. Gross motor skills involve using large muscles to walk, run, or climb. Fine motor skills use small muscles to draw or feed themselves. At one year old, a child might pull themselves up to stand. They may also sit down without any help at all. By 18 months, they might run well but fall down easily. By age two, they can often walk up stairs using a rail. They can even build a tower made of five cubes.

Language is another big part of how toddlers grow. Most children say their first word around twelve months of age. Between 18 and 24 months, their vocabulary grows very fast. They might learn as many as seven to nine new words every day. By 21 months, they start using two-word phrases like "I go." Some toddlers even practice talking to themselves in their cribs at night. This is called crib talk, and it helps them learn to communicate. They use these skills to tell parents what they need.

Scientists have studied how these early steps link to the future. A study from 2007 looked at 5,000 children born in the United Kingdom in 1946. It found that children who learned to stand earlier often had higher intelligence scores later. Another study in 2018 looked at how quickly children could name objects in pictures. Children who could form sentences before 24 months had an average IQ of 107 points. Those who formed sentences later had an average of 101 points. These studies show that early milestones can be linked to how the brain develops.

Toddlers also face big changes in their feelings and self-image. Around 18 months, they begin to see themselves as separate from their parents. You can see this during a rouge test using a mirror. If you put a mark on their face, they will touch their own face. This shows they know the reflection is actually them. They also start to feel new things like pride or embarrassment. Sometimes, they have temper tantrums because they have strong feelings but cannot express them. They are simply testing how the world works around them.
