While many people use the word baby, infant is a more formal term. In medical settings, doctors use the word neonate for babies in their first 28 days.

Before a baby is born, they are called a fetus. Most people use the word infant for children under one year old. Some people use it for children up to two years old. Once a child learns to walk, they are often called a toddler instead.

Newborns have many unique physical features. Their heads are very large compared to their bodies.

An adult skull is about one-seventh of their body length. A newborn's skull is about one-fourth of their body length. The head circumference for a full-term infant is usually 33 to 36 cm. Many parts of the skull are not yet bone. These soft spots are called fontanels. There is a diamond-shaped spot at the front and a triangular spot at the back. A protein called noggin helps keep these bones from joining too early.

A newborn's skin might look grayish or blue at first. It reaches a normal color once the baby breathes. They are often coated in a white substance called vernix caseosa. This substance may act as a barrier against germs. Some babies also have fine hair called lanugo. This hair often disappears within a few weeks. The umbilical cord is also bluish-white. It contains two arteries and one vein to move blood.

Infants need a lot of help to grow.

They are altricial, which means they depend on adults for a long time. Babies use crying to show hunger or loneliness. They have a sucking reflex to help them eat milk. Most health groups recommend breastfeeding for infants. Between birth and six months, babies should only have milk. As they grow, they can try finger foods like fruit or vegetables. They also need much more sleep than adults. A newborn may sleep for up to 18 hours.

Learning to communicate is a big part of being an infant.

Babies use babbling to start their first simple dialogues. When caregivers repeat these sounds, it helps the baby learn language faster. Babies also learn by watching faces. They can see that they can influence adults through their sounds. Positive touch, like cuddling, helps infants smile and vocalize more. This kind of care helps them grow and feel secure. It is a wonderful way for babies to connect with the world.
