Most people use this word for children under one year old. A newborn is an infant in their first 28 days.

Newborns look different than adults. Their heads are very large for their bodies. The skull has soft spots called fontanels. These spots stay soft so the bones can fuse later. A protein called noggin helps keep the bones from joining too soon.

Babies also have unique skin. They may be covered in a white substance called vernix caseosa. This acts as a barrier to stop germs. They may also have fine hair called lanugo. This hair often disappears in a few weeks.

Infants must rely on adults for everything. They use crying to show they are hungry or lonely. They also have a sucking reflex to help them eat.

Babies need a lot of rest. A newborn might sleep for up to 18 hours a day. Gentle touch and smiles help them learn and grow.
