Most puppies are less than 18 months old. They grow very fast.

Before birth, a puppy grows in three stages. First is the germinal stage. This lasts about two weeks. Next is the embryonic stage. During this time, the puppy grows a heart and brain. It might be the size of a grape.

The last part is the fetal stage. This lasts until the puppy is born.

Puppies are born needing help. They cannot see yet, but they can smell. They use their noses to find their mother. Their eyes open in nine to eleven days. Their ears open a bit later.

Soon, puppies start to play. They may growl, bark, or wag tails. They like to wrestle and chase. It is also important for them to meet many people. This is called socialization. It helps them learn how to act around humans. Meeting many people helps them stay calm as adults.
