A toddler is a young child. They are usually one to three years old. The word comes from "toddle." This means to walk in an unsteady way.

Toddlers grow and learn very fast. They use gross motor skills to move. These are ways they use large muscles to run or climb. They also use fine motor skills. This means they use small muscles to draw or use a spoon.

Language grows quickly during this time. A child might say their first word at one year old. By 18 months, they may learn many new words every day. They also learn to use short phrases to talk.

Toddlers are also learning about themselves. Around 18 months, they see they are a separate person. You can test this with a rouge test. This is when you put a mark on their face. If they touch their own face in a mirror, they know it is them.

Some children also learn to use a potty. Every child grows in their own way. Some may be slower if they were sick or born early.
