Humans learn to use language in many steps. This starts very early in life. Even before birth, a baby can hear sounds. They may recognize their mother's voice while still in the womb.

First, babies use receptive language. This means they understand what others say. They use gestures and sounds to show what they want. Later, they develop expressive language. This is when they use words to speak. By 10 months, babies often start babbling. They might say "mama" or "dada." At this age, they also imitate sounds, like animal noises.

As children grow, they learn how to build sentences. This is called syntax. There are two main ideas about how this happens. One idea is the nativist theory. Noam Chomsky said humans have a built-in tool. He called it a language acquisition device, or LAD. This tool helps children learn rules for all languages. Another idea is the empiricist theory. This theory says children learn from the world around them. They listen to people and repeat what they hear. This is called linguistic input. Parents often use child-directed speech to help. This is a special way of talking to babies.
