Early childhood

Early childhood is a very busy time of growth. It is the stage after being a baby. It usually lasts until a child is five or six years old. This time includes toddlerhood and the start of school.

During these years, a child's brain changes a lot. Between the ages of 2 and 6, the brain grows very fast. It goes from 70% of its adult weight to 90%. This growth helps children learn how to speak and move.

Children learn to move their bodies in two main ways. First, they use large muscles for big actions. These are called gross motor skills. They help kids with walking and running. Next, they use small muscles for precise tasks. These are called fine motor skills. These skills help a child draw, write, or pick up small objects.

Around age five, children also master hand-to-eye coordination. This helps them use their hands and eyes together well.

A thinker named Jean Piaget studied how children's minds work. He identified a stage called the preoperational stage. This happens between the ages of 2 and 7. During this time, children often ask "Why?" to learn about the world. They think very literally about what they hear. For example, if told "night is falling," they might wonder how night falls from the sky.

They may also think objects have human feelings. A child might think a table is "bad" if they hit it. They also experience egocentrism, which means they think everyone thinks just like they do.

Researchers also study how children grow socially and emotionally. One study looked at 1,386 children between the ages of 3 and 7. This study involved four different places. These were Michigan State University, Oregon State University, University of Michigan, and the Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Scientists looked at how children learn self-regulation. Self-regulation is a way of functioning that helps people reach future goals. They found that things like gender and language can play a role. They also looked at how a mother's education affects a child's path.

Learning happens in many ways at once during these years. Children do not learn social or physical skills separately. They learn everything through one big experience. The most learning happens between birth and age three.

To help this growth, children need love, care, and good food. They also need to interact with other children. Making close bonds with peers helps them build social connections. These friendships can stay with them for a long time. Playing with others is one of the best ways to grow.
