The city has many different areas to explore. Some parts are full of shops and hotels. Other parts have many tall buildings and big parks.

Long ago, the city grew around special sheep pastures. These were triangular plots of land where roads met.

Farmers lived in small groups called hamlets. These hamlets gave their names to many modern districts. For example, Korvel and Oerle are names from these old places. The farmers began to weave wool in their own homes. By the 17th century, there were about 300 looms working. Later, the wool industry grew very fast. By 1881, the city had 145 big wool mills.

History tells us that the name Tilburg is very old. The name first appeared in records in the year 709. In the 1400s, a man named Jan van Haestrecht built a castle. This stone castle was later pulled down in 1858. A factory was built on that same spot instead. Tilburg was officially granted city status in 1809. At that time, it only had about 9,000 people.

The city celebrated being a city for 200 years in 2009.

King William II had a special bond with the city. He said he felt happy and could breathe freely there.

The King helped the city by supporting sheep breeding. He even built a palace to use as a home. This palace is now part of the Tilburg City Hall. The local football club, Willem II, was named after him. An obelisk stands in the city to remember him. Even his statue has a place in the heart of the town.

Today, Tilburg is a place of learning and moving goods. It is home to Tilburg University and two other universities.
