It sits near the border of Belgium, touching the Belgian provinces of Antwerp and Limburg to the south. To the north, it borders South Holland and Gelderland. Zeeland lies to the west, while Limburg is to the east. The northern edge follows the Meuse river toward the Hollands Diep strait. This area is part of a large river delta.

The province has a very busy and active way of life. As of January 2023, about 2,626,000 people lived there. Many people live in big cities like Eindhoven, Tilburg, and Breda. The capital city is 's-Hertogenbosch.

Some cities are quite large, like Eindhoven with 231,642 people. North Brabant has a very strong economy. It is the third-largest economy in the whole country. Many people work in farming, forestry, or growing plants in greenhouses.

History shaped how this place looks today. Long ago, this land was part of the Duchy of Brabant. This state was set up around the year 1183 or 1190. For many years, the area was a battlefield during the Dutch revolt. Later, it served as a military buffer zone. In 1815, the province was officially named North Brabant. This name helps people tell it apart from parts of Brabant in Belgium. The borders can even be quite tricky with tiny spots of land crossing between countries.

Nature is a huge part of the province. Most of the land is flat and sits above sea level.

Another area is the De Groote Peel. In the south, there is a region called De Kempen. It has sandy soil, forests, and many farms. This area used to have more heathland and sand drifts in the past.

The culture of North Brabant feels very special. For a long time, most people were Roman Catholic.

This shaped their schools, hospitals, and even their local traditions. Even though fewer people go to church now, the Catholic feeling stays in the culture. People still celebrate traditions like Carnival. You can also see the history of famous artists here. The painter Vincent van Gogh lived and studied in cities like Zundert and Nuenen.
