Theurgy is a type of magic. The word means "divine working." Some people call it divine magic. It is different from practical magic. Practical magic focuses on things in our world. Theurgy focuses on the divine.

Many people use theurgy to reach a god. They want to unite with the divine. This goal is called henosis. Some thinkers say it helps people become better. They may use prayer or fasting. They might also use special symbols. These symbols help them connect to a higher power.

Ancient thinkers had many ideas about this. A man named Plotinus used meditation. He wanted people to find the divine through thought. Later, a man named Iamblichus had new ideas. He thought people needed rituals. He used physical items to help. He believed these rituals could fix the world.

Emperor Julian also used these ideas. He liked rituals and prayer. He saw the sun as a sign of light. Today, some groups still use theurgy. They use it to learn about the soul. They want to understand their place in the universe.
