Theurgy is a special kind of magic focused on the divine. The word itself means "divine working." It is one of two main branches of magic. The other branch is called practical magic or thaumaturgy. While practical magic deals with things in our world, theurgy looks toward the heavens. Many people use these rituals to call upon gods or spirits. Their main goal is often to reach a state called henosis. This is a special word for uniting with the divine.

How does theurgy work for those who practice it? Some thinkers say it is like an ascent up a scale. People might use a strict course of prayer or fasting. They also use devotional preparation to get ready. Some people use physical symbols to connect with higher levels. This is sometimes called working "like with like." They start with physical objects in the material world. Then they move toward mental and spiritual practices. Eventually, they hope their soul unites with the One.

History shows us many important names in theurgy. The first recorded use of the term was in the mid-second century. It appeared in a work called the Chaldean Oracles. A philosopher named Plotinus taught that meditation was key. He believed people could find the divine through contemplation. Later, a student named Iamblichus developed new ideas. He felt that mental thought was not enough. He believed rituals and symbolic materials were necessary. He wrote about these ideas in his work, "On the Mysteries of the Egyptians, Chaldeans, and Assyrians."

There are many specific details about these ancient beliefs. Neoplatonists believed the universe came from a single source called the One. From the One came the Divine Mind, also called Nous. From the Mind came the World Soul, or Psyche. This led finally to Nature, which is called Physis. Emperor Julian lived from 332 to 363. He was a fan of these ideas and used ritual theurgy. He loved prayer and sacrifice. He even wrote a popular hymn to the sun, which he called Helios.

Today, the ideas of theurgy appear in many different places. Some groups, like Esoteric Christianity, use it to reach higher consciousness. They use it to learn the mysteries of God. Other groups, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, teach it too. They believe it helps people understand their true selves. Some thinkers like John Milbank see it in a new way. He suggests it can help create a beautiful world for everyone. It remains a way for people to seek spiritual grace.
