Many people believe in a good God. They also see bad things in the world. This creates a big question. If God is all-good, why is there evil? If God is all-powerful, why does He let it happen?

A theodicy is a way to answer this question. The word comes from Greek words. It means "justifying God." A theodicy tries to show that God and evil can exist together. It offers a way to think about why evil is allowed.

A man named Gottfried Leibniz gave this idea its name. He wrote a book about it in 1710. Some thinkers say evil is just a lack of good. They say it is like a shadow where light should be. Others say evil comes from the results of actions.
