People have long wondered about a big puzzle.

This puzzle is called the problem of evil. It asks why bad things happen. Many people believe in a God with three special traits. First, God is all-powerful. Second, God knows everything. Third, God is all-loving. This is a hard question to answer. If God is all-loving, why is there pain?

Some thinkers call this the logical problem. They ask if a good God and evil can exist at once. Others look at the evidence. They see suffering and think a good God is unlikely.

There are different ways to answer. A defense tries to show that God and evil can exist. A theodicy is a bigger answer. It tries to give a reason why God allows evil. Some say bad things lead to a greater good later.

This question is not just about people. It also includes animals. Animals feel pain from storms or from other animals. This makes the puzzle even deeper for many thinkers.
