A theophany is when a god shows themselves to people. The word comes from Greek. It means "the appearance of a god." This is not just a feeling. It is when a god takes a form people can see.

In old stories, gods appeared in many ways. They might look like humans. They might also appear as bright light, fire, or clouds. In ancient Greece, gods appeared in dreams or visions. In Egypt, gods could take the form of animals. Some people believed statues held the living presence of a god. Priests would show these statues to the public during big festivals.

Many religions have stories of these moments. In the Hebrew Bible, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush. This bush had fire but did not burn up. In the Latter Day Saint movement, Joseph Smith said he saw God and Jesus.

These events are very important to believers. They can bring a message or a rule. They can also show that a leader has power from a god. People have wondered about these signs for a very long time.
