The Third Man is a famous movie from 1949. It is a film noir, which is a style of movie known for dark shadows and moody lighting. People love this film for its acting, its music, and its atmosphere. In 1999, the British Film Institute voted it the greatest British film ever. A poll in 2011 also ranked it as the second-best British film. It tells a serious story about friendship and truth in a city recovering from war.

The story follows an American writer named Holly Martins. He travels to Vienna to find his friend, Harry Lime. Martins learns that Lime has died in a car accident. As he searches for answers, he meets Anna Schmidt, who was Lime's girlfriend. Martins discovers that Lime was involved in a dishonest scheme. Lime was stealing penicillin from hospitals and selling it on the black market. This caused many people to become very sick.

Writer Graham Greene created the story. He first wrote a novella, which is a short book, to help plan the movie. He got ideas for the setting from a woman named Elizabeth Montagu. She showed him the sewers and the clubs in Vienna. He also spoke to Peter Smolka, a reporter who knew about the black market. These real details helped make the movie feel very true. The film was directed by Carol Reed.

Filming took place in several locations. The crew spent six weeks shooting in Vienna. They finished the main parts of the film in December 1948. Later, they moved to studios in the United Kingdom. They used Worton Hall Studios and Shepperton Studios to finish the work. The actor Orson Welles played Harry Lime. He was very famous and even helped write some of the dialogue. One famous line about Swiss cuckoo clocks was added by him.

The movie is famous for its unique look and sound. The camera uses "Dutch angles," which means the view is tilted. This makes the audience feel uneasy or tense. The music is also very important to the film. Anton Karas wrote the "The Third Man Theme." This music used a string instrument and became a huge hit in 1950. Even today, people study the film to see how it changed movie history.
