He is widely known for making grand movies called epics. These are large-scale stories that often take place in many different lands. People call him a "director's director" because his skill is so high. Other famous directors like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese admire his work. He was even voted the 9th greatest film director of all time. His movies helped shape the history of British cinema.

Lean did not start by directing big movies. He began his career as a film editor in the early 1930s. An editor is someone who joins film pieces together to tell a story. He worked on newsreels and many feature films before he became a director. This job in the cutting room was a great way to learn. It gave him a deep understanding of how movies work. He finally made his directorial debut in 1942 with a film called In Which We Serve.

His journey into movies started with a special gift. When he was ten years old, his uncle gave him a Brownie box camera. This was a very big compliment for a young boy. Lean loved to print and develop his own films as a hobby. Later, he worked as a teaboy and a clapperboy at Gaumont Studios. He eventually rose to become an assistant director. These early steps led him to become a master of filmcraft.

Lean directed many famous films based on famous books.
