The room uses a palette of blue-green colors. It also features bright, metallic gold leaf. Many people call it a great example of the Anglo-Japanese style. This style mixes ideas from England and Japan. Today, it sits in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is a very special part of the Smithsonian museum. People love to see how the colors work together.

Building the room was a big job with many steps.

First, Thomas Jeckyll designed it as a porcelain room. He used walnut shelves with an intricate lattice design. These shelves held many blue and white Chinese plates. The walls had old leather hangings from the 16th century. These hangings showed red Tudor roses and pomegranates. Later, James Whistler added his own artistic touches. He painted a wave pattern on the wood. He also added more gold to the walls.

History tells us the room began in a London townhouse.

A shipping man named Frederick Leyland owned the home. He hired architect Richard Norman Shaw to remodel it. Shaw then gave the work to Thomas Jeckyll. Jeckyll worked on the room until he became ill. This illness forced him to stop his work. Whistler then volunteered to finish the dining room. This change led to a very famous story. The room was originally meant for eating and showing art.

Not everything about the room was peaceful.

Whistler and Leyland had a very loud argument. They fought about the art and the money. Whistler even painted two fighting peacocks to show their quarrel. He called this work Art and Money. The two men stopped being friends after this. This drama even affected Jeckyll's health. In 1879, Whistler had to file for bankruptcy. Leyland was the main person he owed money to. It was a very difficult time for everyone.

Eventually, the room found a permanent home.

An art collector named Charles Lang Freer bought it in 1904. He bought the whole room from Leyland's heirs. Freer moved the room to his mansion in Detroit. After he died in 1919, the room went to the Smithsonian. It opened to the public in 1923. The room has even had big repairs recently. It underwent restoration in 2022 to keep it beautiful. It stays a key link to the past for us.
