It was first a dining room in London. A man named Frederick Leyland owned it. He wanted a room for his fine plates. These were blue and white plates from China. Thomas Jeckyll was the first architect to work on it. He used walnut shelves to hold the plates.

Then, an artist named James Whistler took over. He painted the walls. He used blue-green colors and shiny gold leaf. He even painted peacocks on the walls. These birds were meant to show a fight. They represented the artist and the owner. The two men had a very big fight about the room. They even stopped being friends.

Later, a man named Charles Lang Freer bought the whole room. He moved it to his home in Detroit. Now, you can see it in Washington, D.C. It is part of the Smithsonian museum. People visit to see the beautiful colors and the gold. It is a famous example of a special style. This style uses ideas from Japan and England together.
