He was born in Bordeaux in 1840. As a young boy, he won a drawing prize. He later studied to be an architect. However, he soon turned to art instead.

Early in his career, Redon worked mostly in black. He used charcoal and lithography, which is a way of printing. He called these dark works his "noirs."

These pieces often showed strange things from his dreams. Some people called his art a mix of nightmares and dreams.

Later, his style changed. In the 1890s, he began using bright colors. He loved using oil paints and pastels.

He became very interested in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. This interest led him to paint figures like the Buddha. He was also inspired by art from Japan.

Redon's work was very special. It helped lead the way for new styles like Surrealism. His art shows how light can triumph over darkness.
