They move to America to find better jobs and more freedom. The main character is a young man named Jurgis Rudkus. He marries a woman named Ona Lukoszaite in a big wedding feast. At first, Jurgis is strong and feels very positive about his new life. He thinks he can handle any hard job that comes his way. However, the family soon faces many very difficult problems.

Life in the city is much harder than they expected. The family lives in crowded houses and faces constant poverty. They work in meatpacking plants, which are places where animals are processed for food.

These jobs are often very dangerous and unsanitary. For example, workers can get sick from chemicals or bad food. The family loses their savings and even their home. They face many losses, including the deaths of family members due to sickness and accidents.

Sinclair wrote this story after doing a secret investigation.

In 1904, he spent seven weeks working in the Union Stock Yards in Chicago. He worked without telling anyone his true identity. He did this to see the real conditions for himself. He first shared his findings in a newspaper called *Appeal to Reason*. In 1905, the story appeared in many parts over several months. Finally, in 1906, the story was published as a complete book by Doubleday.

This book had a huge impact on the whole country. While Sinclair wanted to help workers, people were most shocked by the food. The book described how meat was sometimes dirty or unsafe to eat. This caused a big public outcry across America. Because of this anger, the government passed new laws to protect people. One important law was the Meat Inspection Act. This law helped make sure that the food we buy is safe and clean.
