He wrote almost 100 books during his life. Many people called him a muckraker. This means he used his writing to expose problems in society. He wanted to show the truth about how people lived and worked. His writing was very popular in the first half of the 1900s. He even won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1943.

Sinclair used his books to change the world. In 1906, he published a famous novel called *The Jungle*. To write it, he spent seven weeks working undercover in Chicago meatpacking plants.

The book showed how dirty the factories were. It also showed how hard life was for poor immigrants. This book caused a huge public outcry. Because of his writing, the government passed the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. They also passed the Meat Inspection Act that same year. Later, his book *The Brass Check* helped lead to the first code of ethics for journalists.

Sinclair had a very interesting childhood in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were Upton Sinclair Sr. and Priscilla Harden Sinclair. His father was a liquor salesman who struggled with alcoholism. His mother came from a very wealthy family.
