He first shared the story in small parts called a serial. This happened between March 1852 and September 1853. The book is known for its many characters and different subplots. It uses two different ways to tell the story. One part is told by the heroine, Esther Summerson. The other part is told by a narrator who knows everything.

This book is very important in English literature.

At the center of the story is a huge legal case. This case is called Jarndyce and Jarndyce in the Court of Chancery. It happens because a person wrote several wills that disagree with each other.

This case lasts for a very long time and is called an interminable case. It affects many people, like Richard Carstone and Ada Clare. Richard is a ward of the court who tries many different jobs. He even tries to be a doctor and a soldier. Sadly, the long legal battle causes him to lose all his money.

Dickens based parts of his story on real life. He said there were many actual examples for his fictional court case. One real case was Thellusson v Woodford. That case started in 1797 and was not finished until 1859.

Dickens used his writing to show how the legal system worked. Some people in the legal world thought his ideas were too much. However, his book helped people fight for judicial reform. This movement led to new legal reforms in the 1870s.

The setting of the book is also very special. Dickens describes London as a murky city filled with fog.

This was a new idea for books at that time. It helped start a style called urban Gothic literature. This style uses fog to make cities feel dark and mysterious. Some people think the story happens in 1827. Other people think it takes place in the 1830s because of a railway. This shows how much detail is hidden in the text.

Bleak House has influenced many other things in culture. It was even made into a film in 1901. That film was called The Death of Poor Joe. It was the first time a Dickens story was filmed. The book also connects to real people through its characters. For example, the character Harold Skimpole is thought to be a portrait of Leigh Hunt. The story shows how big secrets can change lives forever. It remains a very important book for people to study today.
