Charles Dickens wrote this story in the mid-19th century. He first published it in weekly parts in a magazine. This magazine was called All the Year Round. The parts ran from December 1, 1860, to August 1861. Later, a company called Chapman & Hall published it in three volumes.

Dickens called the idea for the plot "fine, new and grotesque." He was very happy with how much people bought the story.

Many famous people have shared their thoughts on this book. A man named Thomas Carlyle called it "that Pip nonsense." However, he still laughed out loud while reading each new part. Another writer, George Bernard Shaw, praised it as being "consistently truthful." The book is set in Kent and London during the early 1800s.

In 2003, a BBC poll ranked the novel 17th in a big reading contest. It has been translated into many different languages.

You might recognize the characters from movies or plays. The book features a colorful cast that has entered popular culture. There is the strange Miss Havisham in her old wedding dress.

There is also the beautiful but cold Estella. You might also meet the kind blacksmith, Joe Gargery. The story uses intense images like prison ships and heavy chains. These details help readers feel the world Pip lives in.
