Scrooge is a very cold and lonely man. He is a miser, which means he hates spending money. He works in a warehouse at Cornhill. He is also very mean to his clerk, Bob Cratchit. Scrooge hates Christmas because he thinks it is wasteful. He even tells people to go to workhouses instead of giving to charity.

One Christmas Eve, Scrooge's life changes forever. The ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley, visits him. Marley wears heavy chains made from his own greed. The ghost warns Scrooge that three more spirits will visit.

The first spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Past. It shows Scrooge his lonely childhood and his old love, Belle. The second is the Ghost of Christmas Present. It shows him how his greed hurts the Cratchit family. The final spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

It shows a dark future where Scrooge dies alone.

Scrooge learns many lessons from these scary visits. He sees that his clerk's son, Tiny Tim, might die. This makes Scrooge feel a lot of regret. He begs the spirits for a second chance to be good. When he wakes up on Christmas Day, he is a new man. He becomes very kind and generous to everyone. He even becomes a second father to Tiny Tim. He joins his nephew Fred for a happy Christmas dinner.

People have many ideas about how Dickens created Scrooge. Some think he misread a gravestone in Edinburgh. Others think he was inspired by a stingy man named John Elwes. Dickens might have also used ideas from a man named Daniel Dancer. The name Ebenezer might mean "stone of help." This name fits because the character finds help to change his life. Some think his name comes from the word "scrouge," which means to squeeze.

Scrooge is so famous that his name is used in real life. People use his name to describe someone who is greedy. His famous phrase, "Bah! Humbug!" shows that someone is unhappy with a tradition. Many actors have played him in movies and on stage. Even the character Scrooge McDuck was partly based on him. This shows how much people still love his story of change. His journey from a cold man to a kind one is a classic tale.
