The Bund

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Bund is a famous waterfront area located in central Shanghai.

It is a protected historical district that sits along the western bank of the Huangpu River. This area is part of the Huangpu district in eastern China. The Bund centers on a section of Zhongshan Road, specifically East Zhongshan Road No. 1. This road runs through the former Shanghai International Settlement. Across the river, visitors can see the modern skyscrapers of the Lujiazui area in Pudong.

The name "bund" was borrowed from the Hindustani language. It originally referred to a dyke or an embankment. In Chinese treaty ports, it described an embanked quay along a shore. The Chinese name for this place is actually unrelated to that origin. It literally means "outer bank." This name distinguishes this riverfront from the "inner bank" near the old city of Shanghai. The Bund stretches for one mile, or 1.6 kilometers, along the river. It begins at Yan'an Road in the south and ends at the Waibaidu Bridge in the north.

Historically, the Bund was a very powerful center for foreign interests. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it operated as a legally protected treaty port. It was initially a British settlement. Later, the British and American settlements combined to form the International Settlement in 1863. The area housed many banks and trading houses from various nations. These included the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium. It also held consulates for Russia and Britain.

The architecture of the Bund is a major part of its identity. There are 52 buildings along the river that use Western classical and modern styles. These structures are often described as Eclecticist. This means they mix different styles together. You can find Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, and Renaissance Revival designs. There are also Baroque Revival and Neoclassical buildings. Shanghai holds one of the world's richest collections of Art Deco architecture.

One famous example is the HSBC Building, completed in 1923. At that time, it was called the most luxurious building between the Suez Canal and the Bering Strait.

Many significant institutions once called the Bund home. In the 1940s, it held the headquarters for most major financial institutions in China. This included the "big four" national banks of the Republic of China era. However, things changed after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. During the 1950s, many of these financial institutions moved to Hong Kong. Hotels and clubs were closed or changed their uses. Even the statues of colonial figures that once lined the river were removed.

The Bund has undergone many changes due to economic shifts and natural events. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, economic policies in the People's Republic of China began to thaw. Buildings on the Bund were gradually returned to their former uses. Government offices moved out so financial institutions could move back in. During this time, typhoons caused several floods. To protect the area, the municipal government built a tall levee. This embankment now stands about 10 meters higher than the street level.

In the 1990s, the city widened Zhongshan Road to ten lanes. This caused much of the original parkland to disappear. The ferry wharves that once connected the Bund to Pudong were also removed. However, the government later tried to promote an extended concept of the Bund to boost tourism. This included areas called the "New Bund" or "Northern Bund." A major renovation project was completed on March 28, 2010, just before the World Expo. This project included a multi-stage reconfiguration of traffic. They demolished parts of an elevated expressway and restored the century-old Waibaidu Bridge.

Today, the Bund is a major destination for visitors and locals alike. The road was reconstructed into two levels. Six lanes of traffic now run in a new tunnel. This allowed the city to widen the landscaped promenade along the waterfront.
