The Huangpu River bisects the city, dividing it into different sections. Shanghai is a global center for finance, business, and economics. It also leads in research, science, technology, and manufacturing. The city is a major hub for transportation, tourism, and culture. It is recognized as one of the ten largest economic hubs in the world.

The city functions through several massive industrial and economic systems. The Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port on Earth.

The city also hosts the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone. This was the first free-trade zone established in mainland China. These systems work together to support a massive population of 29,558,908 people in the urban area as of 2025.

Shanghai has undergone many different historical stages. It began as a small fishing village and a market town. Some records suggest the area was known as "Hu" 2,150 years ago. In 1280, it was renamed "Shanghai," which means "Above the Sea."

In the 19th century, the city grew due to domestic and foreign trade. After the First Opium War, it became one of five treaty ports. This led to the establishment of the Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession.

The city became a primary commercial hub of Asia during the 1930s.

The city's development faced many challenges during the 20th century. It was the site of the Battle of Shanghai during the Second World War. This was followed by the Chinese Civil War. After the Communists took control, trade was mostly limited to the Eastern Bloc. This caused the city's global influence to decline during the Cold War. However, the reform and opening up led by Deng Xiaoping changed everything. Extensive redevelopment began in the 1990s, especially in the Pudong New Area. This spurred a return of foreign investment and finance.

Today, Shanghai holds incredible economic significance. The Greater Shanghai metropolitan area produced nearly 13 trillion RMB in 2022.
