The name "the Loop" comes from the transit system. In the late 1800s, the Union Loop was constructed. This was a circuit used by 'L' trains. These elevated trains encircled the central area. Some researchers say the name refers to older cable car lines. These lines used a circuit bounded by Lake, Wabash, Wells, and Van Buren streets. The specific boundaries of the Loop have changed over time. Since the 1920s, the area has been defined by the river, the lake, and Roosevelt Road.

History in this area began with Fort Dearborn. The United States Army built this fort in 1803. It was the first settlement in the area sponsored by the federal government. Chicago was later platted in 1830 by James Thompson. The Sauganash Hotel opened in 1831 near Wolf Point. The area became a commercial center in the 1870s. This grew quickly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire destroyed most of the existing buildings. This destruction allowed for a massive rebuilding process.

This rebuilding led to a new way of building called the Chicago School. Architects developed the first skyscrapers in the Loop. The Home Insurance Building was built in 1885. It is considered the world's first skyscraper. Other famous examples include the Rookery Building and the Monadnock Building. The Willis Tower is a major landmark today. It was formerly known as the Sears Tower. It is the third-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The economy of the Loop is very diverse. It hosts many global and national headquarters. For example, United Airlines is based in the Willis Tower. The financial district near LaSalle Street is very important. It houses the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Many people work in the professional and finance sectors. In 2014, the number of jobs increased by over 13 percent. This represented nearly 63,000 new positions.

While it is a business hub, many people live here too. The residential population has seen a massive boom. Between 2000 and 2020, the population grew by 158 percent. This growth happened as old rail yards were developed. Former industrial buildings were also converted into high-rise residences. In 1948, about one million people visited the Loop daily. Today, the area balances office work with a growing community of residents. This makes the district feel active at all hours.

Culture and recreation are vital to the Loop. Grant Park is known as "Chicago's front yard." It is the city's oldest park. It is located near Lake Michigan. The park features the Buckingham Fountain and the Petrillo Music Shell. It also hosts the Taste of Chicago food festival. Millennium Park is a section of Grant Park that opened in 2004. It contains the famous Cloud Gate sculpture.

The district also contains many theaters, museums, and libraries. It is a place for both work and play.
