This district is a massive hub for work and trade. It is the second-largest business district in North America. Only Midtown Manhattan in New York City is larger. Many global companies keep their main offices here.

This area is famous for its tall, impressive buildings. Many of these are called skyscrapers. The Loop helped start a special way of building called the Chicago School.

Some of the world's very first skyscrapers were built in this neighborhood. One famous example was the Home Insurance Building, built in 1885. Another very tall building is the Willis Tower. It is the third-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The Willis Tower was even the tallest building in the world for nearly 25 years.

The history of the Loop goes back a long time. In 1803, the United States Army built Fort Dearborn there. This was the first settlement in the area supported by the federal government. Later, a huge event called the Great Chicago Fire happened in 1871. The fire destroyed most of the buildings in the neighborhood. However, the area was rebuilt very quickly after the fire. By the late 1800s, the area got its name from the "L" train tracks. These tracks formed a loop around the district.

There is much more to do in the Loop than just work. It is a place full of culture and fun. You can find many museums, theaters, and libraries here. Grant Park is a large park located near the lake. It is often called "Chicago's front yard."

The park has the big Buckingham Fountain and the Petrillo Music Shell. People visit for huge events like the Taste of Chicago food festival. They also go to the Lollapalooza music festival. Millennium Park is another special spot with famous art like the Cloud Gate sculpture.

The Loop is a busy place where many people live and work. In 1948, about one million people traveled through the Loop every day. While it has many offices, more people have moved to live there recently. Between the years 2000 and 2020, the number of residents grew by 158 percent. The intersection of State Street and Madison Street is a very important spot. It is the starting point for the city's street grid. This grid system is so helpful that many other cities around the world use it too.
