The Bund is a famous waterfront area in central Shanghai.

It runs from Yan'an Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge in the north. Across the water, you can see the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in Pudong. The name "bund" actually comes from a word meaning a dyke or embankment. In Chinese, the name means "outer bank." This helps tell it apart from the "inner bank" near the old city.

Many grand buildings line the edge of the river. There are 52 of these buildings in the main area. They show many different styles from Europe. You might see Gothic, Baroque, or Neoclassical designs. Some buildings are even in the Art Deco style.

The HSBC Building was once called the most luxurious building between the Suez Canal and the Bering Strait. The Customs House has a clock and bell made in England. This clock looks like the famous Big Ben. These buildings make the area look very special and historic.

In the past, the Bund was a very powerful place. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was a center for foreign trade. Many banks and trading houses were located here. These belonged to countries like the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.

Other countries included Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, and Belgium. The area was part of an International Settlement. During the 1940s, it held many of the biggest financial offices in China. Later, many of these offices moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s.

The Bund has changed a lot over the years. In the 1990s, the main road was made ten lanes wide.

A tall levee was also built to stop floods from typhoons. This wall stands about 10 metres higher than the street. In 2010, the area finished a big renovation project. They fixed the old Waibaidu Bridge at the northern end. They also moved some roads into a new tunnel. This helped create a wider walkway for people to enjoy the view.

Today, people visit the Bund to see the sights.
