The region also functions as the primary railroad hub for the United States. In the 1800s, the city's location near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed made it a natural transit point. The opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848 allowed steamboats to connect the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. This connection fueled rapid growth and turned Chicago into a dominant center for manufacturing and retail.

The history of Chicago is marked by both rapid growth and intense challenges. The area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi people.

In the 1780s, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a man of African descent, established a settlement there. He is often recognized as the "Founder of Chicago." The city was officially incorporated in 1837. However, disaster struck in 1871 during the Great Chicago Fire. The fire destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 people homeless.

Despite this, the population continued to rise as the city rebuilt.

Rebuilding after the fire led to major breakthroughs in architecture and engineering. Chicago became a leader in the development of the steel-framed skyscraper. The Home Insurance Building, completed in 1885, used steel-skeleton construction.

This ensured that sewage flowed away from Lake Michigan and toward the Illinois River. This prevented the pollution of the city's primary freshwater source.
