One notable group was the Mississippian culture, which lived at the Cahokia site. They built an enormous urban complex near present-day Collinsville. This site included more than 100 platform and burial mounds. Monks Mound was the largest structure in this complex. It is the largest Pre-Columbian structure north of the Valley of Mexico. The mound is very high and wide, containing about 22 million cubic meters of earth.

Archaeologists have found elaborate ceramics and copper tools there. These items show that Cahokia was a true urban center with many specialists. The civilization eventually vanished in the 15th century for unknown reasons.

European contact changed the landscape of the region significantly.

French explorers arrived in the 17th century. Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet explored the Illinois River in 1673. The French established settlements as part of the New France colony. They built forts at places like Peoria and Starved Rock. Eventually, the British took control of the area after the Seven Years' War. Following American independence in 1783, settlers began arriving from Kentucky via the Ohio River. Illinois was part of the Northwest Territory before it became a state. It officially achieved statehood in 1818 as the 21st U.S. state.

Technological and political changes drove rapid growth during the 19th century.

John Deere invented the self-scouring steel plow, which was a major breakthrough. This invention allowed farmers to work the rich prairie soil more effectively. It attracted many immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. During this time, the Illinois and Michigan Canal was built. A massive railroad network also began to spread across the state. These systems turned Illinois into a national transportation hub. Chicago grew so quickly that it became the world's fastest-growing city by the late 19th century. The state's northern border was even moved north to include the Chicago River and Lake Michigan shoreline.

The industrial era brought even more diversity to the population.
