geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Jiangnan is a major geographic region located in China. The name is the pinyin romanization of a term meaning "lands south of the Yangtze River."

This area sits immediately south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It includes the southern part of the Yangtze River delta. The region encompasses the city of Shanghai and parts of several provinces. These include southern Jiangsu, southeastern Anhui, northern Jiangxi, and Zhejiang Province.

The geography of Jiangnan has shaped its history and culture. The climate is characterized as warm and wet. These conditions are ideal for supporting large-scale agriculture. Historically, the region was home to the Majiabang and Hemudu cultures. Later, the Liangzhu culture existed from around 2600 to 2000 BC. These ancient people built houses on stilts over rivers or lakes. Their economy relied on fishing and rice cultivation.

Trade and transportation have always driven the prosperity of Jiangnan. The region sits near the Grand Canal to the north. The Yangtze River flows to the west. Many seaports, such as Yangzhou, connect the area to the sea. These routes allowed for the export of highly profitable products. Jiangnan produced famous silk and green tea. It was also known for celadon porcelain from Shangyu.

Political power has frequently centered in this region. During the Three Kingdoms period, Jianye, which is now Nanjing, was the capital of Eastern Wu. In the 10th century, Qian Liu founded the small coastal kingdom of Wuyue. After the Jin–Song war in the 1120s, the Song dynasty retreated south. They established a new capital at Hangzhou in 1127. Later, the Ming dynasty rose from local conflict. Zhu Yuanzhang captured Suzhou in 1367 and became the first Ming emperor.

Nanjing has served as a vital political hub for many centuries. It was the capital of the Ming dynasty until the early 15th century. The Yongle Emperor eventually moved the capital to Beijing. During the 19th century, the Taiping Rebellion occupied much of Jiangnan. The rebels established their regime with Nanjing as their capital. Following the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, the Republic of China also named Nanjing its national capital.

The region is also defined by its linguistic and social identity. Most native residents speak Wu Chinese dialects. However, the demographics of certain cities have changed over time. In Yangzhou, a massacre during the transition from Ming to Qing caused a decline in Wu speakers. This led to the rise of Jianghuai Mandarin in that city. Some Wu-speaking populations no longer view Yangzhou as part of Jiangnan. This shows how language can influence geographic identity.

Today, Jiangnan remains a global economic powerhouse. Shanghai is one of the most important financial and economic centers in the world. Other cities maintain distinct cultural identities. Suzhou is famous for its beautiful architecture, temples, gardens, and canals. Wuxi is located near Suzhou and is known for Lake Tai. Hangzhou remains a historic city, while Ningbo and Wenzhou are important in Zhejiang. The region continues to be a center of high human development and wealth.
