Teddy bear

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A teddy bear is a soft, stuffed toy shaped like a bear. These cuddly friends are much more than just toys for children. People give them as gifts to show love, or to say congratulations. They can even be given to show sympathy when someone is sad. Some people love them so much they become collectors. These collectors have a special name, and they are called arctophiles.

Making a teddy bear can happen in many different ways. Some bears are made in large factories using machines. These bears often have safety joints to move their arms and legs. Other bears are made by hand by artists or hobbyists. Some makers use mohair, which is cloth made from goat hair. Others use materials like cotton, satin, denim, or even canvas.

The history of the teddy bear began in the early 1900s. It was named after Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. People often called him "Teddy." The name came from a story about a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902. A political cartoon by Clifford Berryman showed the event. Morris Michtom saw the drawing and made a soft bear cub. He sold it in his New York candy shop.

Two different men actually created these bears at the same time. Morris Michtom worked in the United States. Richard Steiff worked in Germany. Steiff showed a bear at a toy fair in March 1903. A buyer ordered 3,000 bears to be sent to America. Some people think these bears were lost in a shipwreck. However, others think the bears simply did not last very long.

Teddy bears appear in many stories and songs we know today. Winnie-the-Pooh is a famous bear from a 1926 book. Paddington Bear also started as a teddy bear in a 1958 book. Even music features them, like the song "The Teddy Bears' Picnic." In Mexico, a huge bear named Xonita was built in 2019. It was over 19 meters long!
