It is known for its unique and fragrant taste. This flavor comes from adding bergamot oil to tea leaves. Bergamot is a small citrus fruit from a tree. Most of these trees grow in Calabria, Italy. This area produces 90% of the world's bergamot oil. People love this tea for its bright citrus scent. It is a very popular way to enjoy a warm drink.

Making this tea can happen in two main ways. One way is to spray or coat the leaves with oil. This method often creates a very strong citrus flavor. Another way is to add dried bergamot orange rinds to the blend. The flavor soaks into the tea while it brews in your cup. Most people use black tea for this blend. Black tea leaves are harvested green and then undergo oxidation. This process makes the leaves darker and gives them a strong flavor. Some people choose to use green or oolong tea instead.

Many stories explain where the name Earl Grey comes from. One legend says a Chinese mandarin gave the blend to Charles Grey in 1803. This man was the 2nd Earl Grey and a British Prime Minister. However, this story might not be true. Lord Grey never traveled to China during that time. Another story says the tea was a gift for his diplomatic work. The Grey family says a mandarin made it to suit their home water. They used bergamot to help balance the lime in the local water.

There are other theories about the tea's history. Some think the name was added much later to seem fancy. Advertisements from the 1850s and 1860s called it "Grey's Tea." The first ads using the full name "Earl Grey" appeared in the 1880s. These ads were made by a company called Charlton & Co. in London. Some believe the name was linked to Henry Grey, the 3rd Earl Grey. He was alive when the title became popular for the tea. This shows how names can change over many years.

Today, you can find many different versions of this tea. There is a blend called Lady Grey that uses cornflower or oranges. You might also find Russian Earl Grey with lemongrass and citrus peels. Some people even make a "London fog" with milk and vanilla. You can use the tea to flavor cakes, chocolates, or even sauces. In movies, a character named Jean-Luc Picard famously orders it hot. It is a classic drink that connects many different cultures and tastes.
