The city even has the Surat Diamond Bourse. This is the largest office building in the world by floor area. It is a major economic centre for the South Gujarat region.

Long ago, Surat grew into a very important port. Before the 1500s, a nearby town called Rander was the main trading spot. When Rander declined, many merchants moved to Surat for new jobs. Some stories say a wealthy merchant named Gopi built the town around the year 1500. He originally wanted to call it Suryapur, which means "city of the sun." Later, the name was changed to Surat.

Many different groups have shaped the history of this city. In the 1500s, the Portuguese traveled to Surat as a seaport. Later, the Mughal Empire took control and made it a rich trading hub. During this time, the city was famous for shipbuilding and textiles. Armenian traders also lived there for a long time. They were known for trading silk, cotton, and precious stones.

You can still see their history in the local cemeteries.

Surat is changing quickly in the modern world. It has been chosen to be a "smart IT city" in India. This means it uses new technology to help the city work better. Many people there use the internet to stay connected.
