A surah is a chapter within the Quran. The Quran contains a total of 114 surahs. These chapters are not all the same length. For example, the shortest surah is called al-Kawthar and has only three verses. In contrast, the longest surah is al-Baqarah, which contains 286 verses.

Most surahs begin with a special phrase called the basmalah. This phrase is "In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful." It acts as a boundary between the different chapters. Only one surah, At-Tawbah, does not start with this formula. Muslims recite these surahs during their daily prayers. The very first surah, Al-Fatiha, is recited in every unit of prayer.

Scholars often group these chapters into two main categories. They are called Meccan and Medinan surahs. This name depends on when the surah was first revealed. A surah is Meccan if it began before Muhammad migrated to Medina. This migration is known as the hijrah. If a surah began after the migration, it is called Medinan. Meccan surahs often focus on faith and the afterlife. Medinan surahs often provide guidance for social life and community rules.

Finding the exact order in which the surahs were revealed is a hard job. The chapters in the Quran are not arranged in the order they were received. They are also not arranged by topic. Instead, they are mostly arranged by size, from largest to smallest. This means the arrangement is not chronological. Some scholars have tried to make lists that show the real order. For example, a 15th-century writer named Abd al-Kafi created a list.

Different thinkers have used different ways to study these chapters. A scholar named Theodor Nöldeke looked at the style of the writing. He noticed that Meccan surahs often have a specific rhyming style. He also saw that they often start with oaths about nature. Another researcher named Richard Bell looked at how Muhammad's role changed over time. He believed the chapters showed him moving from a preacher to a leader. Other people, like Mehdi Bazargan, looked at the length of the verses to guess the order.

Surahs also have unique names to help people identify them. Originally, the chapters did not have titles attached to them. Many names come from the first word of the chapter. Some names come from a central theme, like Al-Fatiha, which means "The Opening." Other names come from a special word found inside the text. For instance, one is called "The Bee" and another is "The Iron." Some chapters even have more than one name.
