In Islam, a hafiz is a person who has memorized the entire Quran. If the person is a woman, she is called a hafiza. This is a very big task because of the size of the book. The Quran contains 114 chapters known as surahs. It also has 6,236 verses in total. There are about 77,797 words in the original Classical Arabic.

Because they hold this knowledge in their minds, hafiz and hafiza are often highly respected. People may even give them special titles like "hafiz sahb."

The act of memorizing the book is called hifz. This is more than just learning words. Many Muslims believe that God will reward and honor those who memorize the text. They also believe these people should act upon what they have learned. To keep the verses in their memory, a hafiz must practice constantly. If they do not practice, they might forget the words.

This constant practice is a way to ensure perfect recall of every verse.

Many students work hard to master the Quran every year. In Pakistan, the scale of this work is quite large. Muhammad Hanif Jalandhari works with a group called Wafaq-ul-Madaris. This group looks after many religious schools called madrasas. He says that one million children have become Hafiz-e-Quran since 1982. This was after a special exam was introduced.

Every year, more than 78,000 students finish this work in Pakistan. This includes 14,000 girls. This number is much higher than the 5,000 students in Saudi Arabia.

Different places have different ways to help people learn. Some people may not know how to read the Arabic script well. To help, teachers use different tools and methods. Some use recorded sounds from CDs or cassettes. Others use tutors who can read the words out loud. This helps the student hear the correct way to say things.

Using clear sounds is a helpful way to learn the right pronunciation.

In Iran, there are also very formal ways to show what a person knows. The Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution has rules for this. They hold at least one special exam every year to check how well the Quran is preserved. People who pass these exams can earn special qualifications. These are similar to school degrees like a diploma or a bachelor's degree. Some can even earn a master's or a doctoral degree.

This shows how much value is placed on this knowledge.
