In the Islamic faith, a hafiz is a person who has memorized the entire Quran. If the person is a woman, she is referred to as a hafiza. This achievement is centered on the concept of hifz, which means the memorization of the holy text. The Quran is a large and complex book to commit to memory. It consists of 114 Surahs, which are individual chapters. There are 6,236 verses within these chapters. In its original Classical Arabic, the text contains approximately 77,797 words.

This process of memorization carries deep spiritual significance for many Muslims. The term hufaz refers to the belief that God will reward and honor those who memorize the Quran. However, the belief includes a specific responsibility. Followers believe that those who memorize the text should also act upon its teachings. A tradition narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr includes a saying attributed to Muhammad. It suggests that a person's rank will be determined by the final verse they recite. This emphasizes the importance of both the memory and the recitation of the text.

Maintaining this knowledge requires a lifelong commitment to practice. A hafiz or hafiza must work constantly to ensure they do not forget the verses. Perfect recall is the goal, and this requires regular repetition. Because of this dedication, hafiz and hafiza are traditionally held in high respect by their communities. They are often given respectful titles. One such title is "hafiz sahb," which translates to "sir hafiz." This social recognition reflects the discipline required to master such a large amount of information.

Thousands of students successfully complete this task every year around the world. In Pakistan, the scale of this tradition is quite large. Muhammad Hanif Jalandhari is the general secretary of the Wafaq-ul-Madaris. This is a central board that oversees many religious seminaries, known as madrasas, that follow the Deobandi sect. Since an exam system was introduced in 1982, Jalandhari states that one million children in this network have become Hafiz-e-Quran. Every year, more than 78,000 students reach this milestone in Pakistan. This total includes 14,000 girls. To provide perspective, Jalandhari compared this to Saudi Arabia, which produces about 5,000 students per year.

Different methods are used to help students learn, especially if they struggle with the Arabic script. Some scholars, known as the ulema, provide explanations to help students understand certain Surahs. There are also debates regarding the romanization of Arabic. This is because people worry about maintaining correct pronunciation when using different alphabets. To solve this, many students use alternative learning tools. They might work with specialized Quran tutors. They may also listen to recorded recitations from qurrā’, who are experts in recitation. Technology like CDs or cassettes provides clear audible sounds to aid the learning process.

In Iran, the preservation of the Quran is managed through a formal system. The Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution (SCCR) has established specific rules for this. At least one specialized examination takes place every year to check how well the Quran is being preserved. This evaluation is reviewed by Dar al-Qur'an al-Karim. This organization is a subsidiary of the Islamic Advertising Organization. These exams ensure that the standards for memorization are met according to set criteria.

This formal system in Iran also connects religious memorization to academic achievement. According to a decree from the SCCR, holders of these specialized qualifications can earn benefits. These benefits are structured like formal academic degrees. Depending on the level of qualification, a person can earn between one and five different degrees. These are aligned with the standard academic ladder. They include a diploma, an associate's diploma, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctoral degree. This system integrates the tradition of hifz into a recognized framework of higher education.
