A surah is a chapter in the Quran. The Quran has 114 surahs. These chapters are not all the same size. The shortest one has only three verses. The longest one has 286 verses.

Most surahs start with a special phrase. This phrase is called the basmalah. It marks the start of a new chapter. Almost all surahs use it, except for one. People recite surahs during their daily prayers. The first surah is read in every prayer.

Scholars group surahs into two main types. They are called Meccan and Medinan surahs. A surah is Meccan if it began before Muhammad moved to Medina. It is Medinan if it began after that move. Meccan surahs often talk about faith. Medinan surahs often give rules for living in a community.

Surahs also have names to help people find them. Some names come from a main theme. For example, one is named "The Opening." Other names come from a special word in the text. One is called "The Bee." Some names come from the very first word of the chapter.
