A succubus is a female demon from old European tales.

Many stories say she visits men in their dreams. She may look like a beautiful woman. Some tales say she has bird claws or a tail. The male version of this spirit is an incubus.

Some people believed these spirits could make children. These children are called cambions. A cambion is half-human and half-demon. Some stories say the wizard Merlin was a cambion.

In the past, people used these stories to explain strange things. They used them to explain why men felt sick at night. They also used them to explain sleep paralysis. This is a state where a person cannot move while waking up.

Some thinkers thought the spirits could harm a person's health. If the visits continued, a man might even die. One old book says demons might use a dead body to act like a person. This was one way people thought spirits could interact with the world.
