Many cultures have stories about night spirits.

One such spirit is called an incubus. People believe this male demon visits women in their dreams. The female version is called a succubus. Some stories say these spirits can have children with humans. These children are known as cambions. For example, some legends say the magician Merlin was a cambion.

These stories exist all over the world. In Brazil, people tell of a river dolphin called a boto. It can change into a handsome man to trick women. In Sweden, a spirit called a mare sits on people's chests. In Turkey, a spirit called Karabasan is thought to weigh down sleepers. In Ukraine, a spirit called a perelesnyk might look like a young man.

Scientists have other ideas about these stories. They think these tales might explain sleep paralysis. This is a state where you cannot wake up or move. During this time, people may see or hear things that are not there. They might also feel a heavy weight on their chest. These real feelings may have led to the old legends of demons.
